IPTV bandwidth calculator – how many Mbit/s do you need?
Use this free IPTV bandwidth calculator to find out how many Mbit/s you really need – for SD, HD, Full HD and 4K, across as many simultaneous streams as your household watches.
Your bandwidth calculator
Set how many simultaneous streams you watch per quality. The calculator shows the recommended download speed (incl. a safety buffer).
How much bandwidth does IPTV need?
Bandwidth need depends on resolution and the number of simultaneous streams. As a rule of thumb per stream: SD ≈ 3 Mbit/s, HD ≈ 5 Mbit/s, Full HD ≈ 8 Mbit/s and 4K ≈ 25 Mbit/s. Add roughly 20% headroom so buffering and other devices do not interrupt playback.
| Quality | Mbit/s / Stream |
|---|---|
| SD | 3 |
| HD (720p) | 5 |
| Full HD (1080p) | 8 |
| 4K (UHD) | 25 |

Why does IPTV stutter despite a fast internet line?
A high speed-test result does not guarantee smooth IPTV. Stuttering despite a fast line usually comes from an unstable connection rather than raw speed: weak Wi-Fi, an overloaded router, peak-time congestion or an overloaded provider. Fixes: use a LAN cable instead of Wi-Fi, restart the router, test at a different time, and check your provider in a free trial. More on genuine 4K and bandwidth in our IPTV in 4K guide.
Tips for a stable IPTV stream
- Prefer a LAN cable over Wi-Fi, especially for 4K.
- Keep ~20% bandwidth headroom above the calculated need.
- Avoid large downloads on other devices while streaming.
- Choose a stable, reputable provider – test before buying.
